The French Polynesia, French overseas territory, is composed by 150 islands of the
Pacific, to midway between Australia and South America. Its 4200 km² of earthly area spread
themselves on a maritime zone of more one than two million km². It is formed of 5
archipelagos with tropical climate: Marquises islands, Society islands (with Tahiti and the
administrative center Papeete), Australes islands and Gambier islands, all of volcanic origin.
To the opposite, the atolls of Tuamotu (880 km², 12374 hab), are of coral origin.
Mururoa, atoll of the Tuamotu archipelago
at 1500 km southeast of Tahiti, is a French nuclear
base since the years 1960. An underground nuclear test in
1985 start an international controversy when the French
secret agents flow the "Rainbow Warrior" supervision
vessel of the organization Greenpeace in a New-Zealand
harbour, because they prepared themselves to protest
in the waters of the atoll.
