Achill Island located in Mayo County in west coast is Ireland’s largest island.

With a population of 2700, Achill is connected to the land by Michael Davitt Bridge, between Achill Sound and Polranny. It’s a swing bridge that allows small boats to pass through. The bridge was built in 1886 and replaced by the existing structure after the World War II.

In addition to Achill Sound, the main villages are Keel, Dooagh, Dooega and Dugort. Nowadays most of the island’s public facilities have been transferred to the “continent” in Polranny.

The island is covered 87% by peat bogs
